About SlyceIt

A 5-second workflow for splitting a restaurant bill — without the awkward math.

Built and maintained by Jofan Pang. Last reviewed June 3, 2026.

The check arrives. Someone reaches for it, someone says they'll DuitNow you later, someone starts dividing by the wrong number, and someone's ordered drinks they don't want to subsidise. SlyceIt was built to delete that whole moment.

Why I built this

It always came down to the same little hassle. Office lunches, dinners with friends, a bill split across three or four families — someone passes the receipt around, someone does the math, and then comes the slightly awkward part of chasing everyone to pay back (or not bothering, and just eating the difference). None of it is a big deal. It's just a bit tedious and slow for something that should take seconds.

I figured if the whole thing felt less daunting and less long-winded, it would just… sort itself out — quickly, and without anyone having to nag. It also seemed obvious that nobody wants to download an app or make an account just to settle lunch. So over one long weekend, SlyceIt came together: your friends tap a link, claim what they ordered, and that's it. No app, no sign-up, no spreadsheet.

That's the whole idea. Hope it saves you the faff.

I've spent over a decade building digital products and businesses across the full size spectrum — from early-stage startups finding their first customers, to later-stage startups scaling what works, to public-listed companies shipping to millions. SlyceIt is the small, personal end of all that: a weekend build to fix something that had quietly annoyed me for years. I still maintain it myself, and I read every piece of feedback.

What SlyceIt is

SlyceIt is a free web app for splitting a single restaurant bill. The host photographs the receipt and shares one link with the group. Friends open the link, claim the items they ordered, and the math works itself out — including taxes, service charges, and any other fees printed on the receipt.

Host pays, friends play

Only the host has an account. Everything guest-facing is anonymous web — no install, no signup, no password. Guests type their name, tap their items, and tap “I've paid”. That's it.

This is the load-bearing product decision. SlyceIt is not a long-term ledger like Splitwise. There are no groups to set up, no IOUs that follow you around, no balances that carry between meals. Every bill is a one-shot transaction that finishes at the end of dinner.

The receipt is the source of truth

SlyceIt doesn't make assumptions about local tax regimes. It reads every line of the receipt — items, taxes, service charges, surcharges, rounding, anything — and splits them proportionally to what each person ordered. That means SlyceIt works in any country whose receipts itemise their charges, not just Malaysia.

What SlyceIt is not

Not a payment app

SlyceIt shows your bank, DuitNow, or e-wallet details so friends can pay you directly — money never flows through us.

Not a ledger

Bills are one-shot. No running balances, no IOUs that follow you around. Settled is settled.

Not a tip calculator

If the receipt printed a tip line, SlyceIt splits it. If not, SlyceIt does not invent one.

Not a social network

No followers, no friends list, no profile pages. Just one bill, one link, one dinner.

Built with

SlyceIt runs on Next.js and Vercel, with Postgres for data, GPT-4o for receipt OCR, and Pusher for the live updates that keep the host's view in sync with the group — a small, modern stack chosen so the whole thing stays fast and cheap to run.
